Steel raw materials and ferroalloys 04 / 06

The inputs ofsteelmaking.

Steel needs iron units and alloying elements: iron ore for the blast furnace and direct reduction, chrome for stainless steel, manganese in almost every grade, vanadium for high-strength steel. We connect suppliers of ores and ferroalloys with steel mills, alloy producers and foundries.

Market context

Steel sets the pace.

Iron ore is one of the largest seaborne bulk trades in the world, and its demand follows steel output in construction, machinery and vehicles. Alloying elements follow specific grades: chrome is tied to stainless steel, manganese is used in almost all steel, and vanadium strengthens rebar and structural steel.

Ores are shipped in large bulk carriers to steel and alloy plants, many of them in Asia and Europe. Ferroalloys are produced in electric furnaces close to ore or power supply and then sold to steel mills and foundries. Prices are commonly referenced to published indices adjusted for the chemistry of each cargo.

How we handle it

From sample todelivery.

Steel raw materials are bulk cargoes: chemistry, size distribution and moisture decide which plant can use them. We match each specification with the furnace that can take it and coordinate inspection at loading.

How we handle it

  1. 01

    Sampling

Representative samples taken under the procedure agreed between the parties.

  2. 02

    Independent assay

Tests at independent laboratories; results are shared with buyer and seller.

  3. 03

    Inspection

Weight, quality and packing verified by an inspection company at loading or at destination.

  4. 04

    Logistics coordination

Transport, storage and documents with the providers chosen by the parties.

Specification

What buyers usually specify.

MaterialSpecification
Iron oreIron content, silica, alumina, phosphorus and sulphur, moisture and size distribution.
Chrome oreCr₂O₃ content, chrome-to-iron ratio, silica and size.
Manganese oreManganese and iron content, silica, phosphorus and size.
VanadiumVanadium content and impurities; size and packing for ferrovanadium.
FerroalloysAlloy content, carbon, silicon, phosphorus and sulphur, size range and packing.

Common industry practice. Each transaction sets its own specification and assay methods.

Markets and end uses

Where the material goes.

  1. 01

    Construction steel

Rebar, beams and plate for buildings and infrastructure.

  2. 02

    Stainless steel

Chrome and nickel for corrosion-resistant grades.

  3. 03

    Automotive and machinery

    High-strength and alloy steels.

  4. 04

    Foundries and refractories

Castings, chrome sand and furnace linings.

Compliance

Verification first, then thetransaction.

Bulk ores follow the IMSBC Code for safe carriage, including moisture limits for fines. Every counterparty passes KYC and sanctions screening, and material placed on the EU market is subject to REACH.
